Sand Box Toys

In regards to babies, you probably notice when it comes to toys, such as playground or sand box toys, they normally end up in a child’s mouth. This could be potentially harmful considering that many vinyl and plastic toys have PVC’s or polyvinyl chloride and BPA’s or Bisphenol A. These are both synthetic chemicals that have a disruptive affect on the hormonal system. You may be wondering what can your child play with that will not cause them any harm.

There are many toys that are specially made that are phthalate and PVC free. Just take a look at the Lego brand being a true example of this. When you think of sand box toys, you probably think of plastic toy accessories. Since it is probably difficult to determine if a plastic or vinyl toy has these chemicals in them, a great healthy alternative to this would be getting a wooden toy combination for the sandbox. Solid wood is the most suggested and is better than its alternative, particle wood and plywood (which are both pressed). Avoid any finishes or paints that contain a multitude of chemicals and can be toxic. Try using alternative finishes such as, walnut oil, beeswax, or linseed.

Another alternative to plastics are toys made from materials that are stamped organic and lead-free. Toys that are made in the United States and Europe tend to have stricter guidelines for these types of products.

There are certain crops that are sprayed with chemicals that have been linked to cancer. Some of those crops happen to be cotton, which is very popular all the way around for toys and clothes. You are better off in choosing wool or cotton that has been untreated and contains no toxic dyes if you want to remain eco-friendly.

It may be impossible to avoid all plastics or anything that is chemical laden, however, by increasing your awareness, you have made your child much safer when they are playing with sand box toys during their youth. Decreasing your child’s risk by becoming eco-friendly is best for your child’s welfare as well the environment.
