Carlos Augusto Alves Santana was born in Autlan de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico in 1947. He learned to play the violin when he was just five years old and he developed love of music at a very early age and by the age of eight, he played the guitar. He became famous as Mexican and American rock guitarist in the late 1960s with his first band Santana, which offered an eclectic mix of rock, salsa and jazz fusion.
Santana spent plenty of time listening to Richie Valens in his childhood and was influenced by his muscia as there were only few Latinos to rely on for at that time. His family eventually moved to San Francisco, where Santana attended James Lick Middle School and found more opportunities to advance his passion for music by learning to play guitar from Javier Batiz, a famous Tijuana guitarist and see many of his favourite music idols perform live.
Carlos Santana and his band Santana were signed by the CBS records to record their first album, with their first release and successful performance at Woodstock Music and Art Festival in 1969, they have achieved success throughout the San Francisco area. With this great exposure at Woodstock the popularity of this band increased and brought in decades of success for the talented guitarist. Santana released their first eponymous album in August, 1969, which became very successful reaching fourth position on the U.S. album charts. This top single Willie Bobo song ‘Evil Ways’ has also ranked ninth on Billboard Hot 100. Santana was ranked at number 15 on Rolling Stone magazines list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003. He has won 3 Latin Grammy Awards and 10 Grammy Awards in his long musical career.
