Save Electricity at Home

-

Saving on electricity will not only help you reduce your individual monthly bills, but work to save the environment as well. Read on for some tips to save on electricity costs.

Monitor your Usage

Saving on electricity costs can be easy. Many electric companies offer a service by which you are able to see your bills on a monthly, daily and even hourly basis. If your electric company uses graphs as a visual aid, you can easily view how much electric is going out and the peak times you are using electricity. Take advantage of this service whenever possible.

Read your Meter

It is also helpful to read your meter. If you have a digital meter, you can turn off all major appliances in your house and then turn them on individually and see how many kilowatts each appliance uses. This will help you to determine energy output and where you can reduce costs. A central air unit is the usual culprit for high energy consumption.

Set your Thermostats Higher

If you want to save electricity at home, try keeping your thermostat at 80 degrees when at home and turning it off when you are not home is one way to lower electric bills. Just remember, if you have animals, it is not wise to completely turn off your air conditioning, however, setting it in the low 80’s will save energy and keep the home tolerably cool. Check your water heater as well. Set it to 100% or lower to reduce energy costs.

Seal Your House

Increase your home energy efficiency by using some simple tips. Look anywhere you might be losing hot or cool air in your home and seal it to ensure your energy usage is the most efficient. Doors and windows are where many homes lose energy. Basic rubber seals placed around doors will help to retain heat in the winter and cool in the summer. Silicone sealant can prevent air leakage around windows.

Shade and Paint

Window tint can help block out much of the summer light if you live in a warm sunny climate. Titanium window block and other window tints can reduce heat in the home by 30% or more. In a cooler climate you might add white screens to the inside or outside of windows to block sunlight. These are easily removed and stored when they are not needed. Painting your house a light color will reflect the sun and help keep your house cooler as well.

Unplug Appliances

When electrically run appliances are plugged in, but not running, they are still pulling power. Many people do not realize how many things they have plugged in that they never even use. Although the electric draw of non-working, plugged-in appliances is generally very modest, every little bit counts when you want to save on electricity. Unplug anything that you are not using in order to save on electric costs.

Turn off Lights and Fans

Fans do not cool a room, but only people or animals in the room, so it is not necessary to leave a fan running if you leave the room. Also, be aware of your light usage. Do not even turn lights on during the day if possible, and make sure every person in your house turns each light off when they leave the room.

Roofing

A poorly constructed or damaged roof will cause you to lose much of your energy out of the top of your house. If you want to retain cool air, make sure your roof is in good condition. For flat or metal roofs, you might consider an aluminum or white coating that has reflective purposes. Shingles and other roofing materials will also help you beat the heat.
