Security Courses for the Security Professional

It wasn’t too many years ago that if you wanted to become a security guard you simply applied at the employment office, they gave you a uniform, and you started patrolling the grounds or the building. No special skills were required. No tests were administered, no certification was required. In fact, one of the highlights of the job was trying to keep from falling asleep out of sheer boredom. My, how things have changed!

The Bad Guys Were Always Out There

But with the horrific events of 9/11, the world turned upside down. Everything was scrutinized, questioned, and reevaluated. And the one area that received the most attention was security, and the demand for security courses and education to turn out truly professional security officers. And while airport and transportation facilities received an inordinate amount of security analysis, it spilled into other sectors as well. These included security for manufacturing operations, retail establishments, government buildings, educational institutions, power generating plants, laboratories, banks/financial structures, and dozens-upon-dozens more. The demand for top-notch, professional security officers mushroomed, and security industry scrambled to meet the needs. And out of this was born a long list of security course curriculums that changed the security landscape forever.

What Are Security Courses and What They Can Do For You

Here in Australia, there are institutions located throughout the country that offer courses for persons interested in entering the field. Most of these courses concentrate of the basic for getting a security certificate. Without a security certificate, you simple won’t be able to apply for a job as a security guard or officer at any company, government facility, educational institution, and airport or transportation operation. So, if you’re serious about pursuing a security career, this is the place to start.

What You Can Expect From Taking Security Courses

Most security courses, and certainly the initial ones, run for about two weeks, are reasonably priced, and will give you hands-on training, and classroom instruction on becoming a security professional. But like all educational processes, the more courses you take, the more professional you become, which leads to higher pay rates, and more rapid advancement. After the basics, you may elect to take courses for specific assignments including aviation security, power/chemical plant protection, educational facilities and more. While the procedures for security run pretty much across the board for all facilities, the more security courses you take for specific venues, the more rapid your advancement up the managerial ladder.

Continuous Learning

One of the things to look for while applying for a job as a security officer, is the employer’s track record of encouraging additional educational pursuits either in-house, or at another facility. Why is this important? Simply because the security industry, and the technology that supports it, is changing almost on a daily basis. Companies that don’t take advantage of the latest in security courses and techniques, will rapidly fall behind. That means you, as a security employee, will also lag behind the industry standards, making it more difficult to get a security job with another company. Also, by asking up front if the company has such provisions for advanced learning you show the interviewer you’re serious about your profession, and that can be a big plus in your employment file!

So, what’s It Going to Be?

As mentioned, the first security course you’ll take will basically be to get your certification, and your foot in the door. Most employers do not require college (although having a college degree can be a plus), but will be impressed if you’ve gone beyond the basic security course, and have taken (or plan to take) more advanced courses. Aviation security courses are especially in demand, and if you’re interested in this fast paced sector of the business, you should look for an institution that offers both basic, and advanced courses. The demand for aviation security personnel is one of the fastest growing in the market. It includes not only overseeing metal detecting equipment, but surveillance, airport patrol, checking, and many other security functions. These security officers are highly regarded professionals who are on the front line of keeping air travel, and passengers safe from harm. But regardless of what security sector you choose to join, there are plenty of options out there. Just make sure to get that security course training!
