Seek Ye First The Kingdom Of God

Many people all around the world are seeking for something. They see a whole full of turmoil, hate, shame, guilt and hurt. Many think that they can find happiness in material things, money, big palaces, position, fame, friends, parties and drugs. However, often too late they realize that these things do not satisfy the soul and its inner longings and death pulls their loved ones away, cuts short their own aspirations. All of the success feels hollow. What is missing?

When Jesus Christ walked the earth in human form He asked the question:
Mark 8:36 “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

The Bible makes certain things clear on this subject:

(1) Life is not about what you own
Matt. 16:26 “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Luke 12 tells the story is told of a rich man that was going to do major overhauling of his business to build up a bigger business and he would relax and eat and drink and be merry afterwards. However, he did not know that he was going to die that very night. What profit was there in this if he did not live close to God? There was therefore no Heaven or eternal life for him. He lived only for the here and now and not for the hereafter.

Nabal’s servants in the Old Testament were greatly helped by David who was soon to be king. When David requested a little help from him he roughly refused and selfishly asked why he should give any of his possessions to someone else using the word “my” a couple of times. He was the epitome of selfishness in the Bible.

(2) In life without God even laughter is not the best medicine
Laughter is not happiness. True happiness alone gives true, pure laughter. Any other type of laughter, when tested under the microscope of truth, is as hollow as scorn, mockery, and false pleasure. Prov. 14:13 says “Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.”

(3) The solution
In the same chapter where Jesus taught His disciples how to pray He gave the solution for all the troubles and maladies in the world. In Matt. 6:19, 20 He said:
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.”

How exactly do we do this? Jesus adds in Matt. 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things [your needs]shall be added unto you.”

(4) The Reaction
However, many even among the professed spiritual ones leave God out of their thoughts and plans. They prefer idols rather than ideals; the world rather than the Word; they prefer to rush off to get some money rather than to ponder on the Jesus of Gethsemane – the place where Jesus confirmed His decision to die so that we might live.

Rom. 1:25 says they “changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”

Why? As Rom. 1:28 says:
“… they did not like to retain God in their knowledge.”

Let us choose to serve the God who can give us happiness even in a world of sin and will come back again to carry us to Heaven, a God who, according to 2 Peter 1:4 gave us ‘exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.’
