Anterior Deltoid

Lateral Deltoid

The lateral deltoid muscle sits on the outside of your shoulder and its primary duty is to lift your arms outside the frame of your body, as if you’re stretching to the side for something.

Posterior Deltoid

The posterior deltoid sits at the back of your shoulder and it is responsible for being able to bring your arms backward, as well as to bring your shoulders closer together so that you can grab and lift stuff.

When it comes to the anatomy of shoulder muscles, many people don’t realize that there are muscles associated with the rotator cuff. They picture the rotator cuff as the actual joint itself, with the tendons and ligaments associated with the joint, and not the muscles themselves. However, there are four muscles that are a part of the rotator cuff – the teres minor, the supraspinitus, the subscapularis, and the infraspinitus.

These four muscles are integral in keeping your shoulder joint stable and secure. Without these muscles, it would be virtually impossible to utilize your arm for things like lifting. In fact, without proper rotator cuff movement, using your arms successfully for many tasks is nearly impossible. So even though the rotator cuff muscles are generally overlooked when it comes to the anatomy of shoulder muscles, they are actually just as important as their deltoid partners.
