The Benefits of Traditional Wood-Burning Stoves

Traditional wood-burning stoves are making a comeback as people are looking for ways to save money on energy bills and heat their homes more efficiently. Not only do wood-burning stoves enable you to do this but they also give your home a great traditional feel that’s not always possible with other types of fireplace.

When deciding on what type of stove to get, you should think about the existing decor of your home and pick a model that suits. You also need to consider the type of wood to burn. Any professional company who sells wood-burning stoves will be able to advise you on these issues so you make the right decision.

It might be tempting to go with a modern gas or electric fire because you think they’ll be less hassle but wood-burning stoves come with some key benefits that make them a great choice for homeowners.

These include –

  • Reduce your carbon footprint – The effect that burning fossil fuels has on the environment is something that’s constantly in the news. It’s clear that the most effective way of dealing with the problem of environmental pollution is for people to reduce their own carbon footprint as much as possible. Because wood is in abundance and grown naturally, it’s a very sustainable material to use.
  • Heat your home more effectively – Whilst traditional fireplaces like open fires are beautiful to look at, they don’t provide an efficient way of heating your home at all. Burning logs in a grate does not evenly distribute heat throughout the room and because they’re connected to a chimney, a lot of the warm air is sucked out of the room and replaced by cold air. Wood-burning stoves on the other hand, run at 80% efficiency so you get the most benefit from the wood you’re burning.
  • Easy to clean – Wood-burning stoves produce very little smoke and ash, which means you don’t have to spend all your time cleaning them. In fact, even when you use the stove daily, you will not have to clean it more than once every few weeks. The bed of ash that forms will actually help the wood to burn better too.
  • Can be used in smoke-free zones – Because there are so many smoke-free zones in the UK now, especially in urban areas, you might be concerned about the legality of owning a wood-burning stove. You needn’t worry however, since most stoves are now clean enough to be used in these areas.
