The Complete Guide on How to Restore Mac To Factory Settings

-

After using a Mac for years, many owners prefer selling it with the interest of making some money to offset their investment. But many Mac users, before selling off their device, forget to clear the device in the right way. As a result, they end up handing over their device with their vital and sensitive information still stored on it. Such information can be misused once someone else gets his hand on the device. Thus, this article will tell you how to restore Mac to factory settings so that all your information gets completely erased. Also, the factory restore will allow the new owner to have a fresh start with the device.

The factory restore method mentioned below will work for all models of Mac such as Macbook, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, and iMac.

Before selling off the old Mac, many users consider removing their user account and set up a new administrative account for the new owner. This method also helps but it doesn’t guarantee the complete wiping of the data stored on the device. Thus, the most appropriate method is to restore Mac to factory settings. That will format the system completely and will also reinstall the new OS X.

1. Steps for Restoring Mac to Factory Settings

Backup

An essential step in the process of factory reset is to create a complete data backup. Backing up a Mac system is a simple process. You can easily get it done by using a system cloning tool or the Mac’s inbuilt tool, Time Machine. Whichever method you apply, at the end you should have a full copy of your system’s data so that you can restore the data to your new system if needed.

2. Disable Online Accounts

The second important step is to disable all those services specifically associated with your system. Before selling off your device, you should always check and confirm that you have disabled all the services subscribed to your device. Many users easily overlook or forget this aspect. Doing this is important because certain Mac services allow limited device authorization. For example, to play iTunes music on any Apple device, you need to authorize the device first. However, there is a limit to the number of the device you can authorize to iTunes using a particular Apple ID.
Thus, if there is any device authorized to iTunes, and if you are not using that device anymore, then you must de-authorize it. Like iTunes, if there is any Mac service to which you have authorized the old Mac that you are planning to sell, then don’t forget to disable the authorization before giving away the device.

3. Format and reinstall

Now, you are ready to reset Mac to factory settings. Technically, the factory restore process includes two steps: Format and Reinstall.

In this process, the original operating system of your device will get formatted and then a fresh Mac OS X will get installed. When it comes to reinstalling a fresh copy of Mac OS X, you have two options.

• First, you can install the latest OS X that you purchased from the Apple App Store.
• Second, you can install the original OS X that came along with your device when you bought it new.

Anything you purchase from the App Store gets registered in your name and account, so even the latest Mac OS X will be in your name and not in the new owner’s name. Thus, it is a better idea to install the original OS X. In that way, you will provide the new owner the scope to choose the OS X of his/her choice.
