The Last Stand soundtrack features music by Mowg (Eden, Doomsday Book, I Saw The Devil, Masquerade, Silenced).
He is back. Arnold Schwarzenegger is finally back. We last saw him in a leading role in 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. That’s nearly a decade ago. Yeah, we saw him in a few films after 2003 but these were all cameos. He appeared in both The Expendables movies but you really can’t call them Schwarzenegger movies. A true Schwarzenegger movie is one where Schwarzenegger gets to kick 99% of the enemies’ butts, not one where he’s sharing the body count with the likes of Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone and Jet Li. Anyway, we will finally get to see him again in a lead role when The Last Stand opens on January 18, 2013. It’s an action thriller so it’s all good. It would really be disappointing if he marks his comeback by making another Kindergarten Cop or Jingle All The Way sort of movie.
The supporting cast looks great as well with the exception of Johnny Knoxville playing Schwarzenegger’s sidekick. This Knoxville guy is annoying as hell. Here, he plays yet another crazy and always smiling fool. He was funny with the gang in Jackass but this is no Jackass. This is not MTV. Why does Schwarzenegger need a sidekick anyway? Because he’s gotten older? Maybe that’s why. But as it goes with cinema, wherein some actors suck in dozens of movies before they finally turn out with a noteworthy performance, there’s still hope for crazy Knoxville. Who knows, he might even steal the whole show with his performance and ruin Schwarzenegger’s much-awaited return. We’ll find out on January 18, 2013.
Joining Schwarzenegger and Knoxville in the cast are Rodrigo Santoro, Zach Gilford, Forest Whitaker, Peter Stormare, Luis Guzman, Genesis Rodriguez and Jaimie Alexander. Thank God there’s no Stallone, Statham, Norris and Van Damme in there. Anybody who complains about the cast in general should be punched strongly in the mouth and neck.
The Last Stand was directed by Kim Ji-wnoon. This could prove to be a good thing or a bad thing. Ji-wnoon is a very talented director from Korea but this is his first American production. But based on the trailer for the film, he seems to have done a great job. And kudos as well to Kim Ji-yong, the cinematographer who is also Korean.
As the title suggests, The Last Stand is about the joint efforts of law enforcement officers to make a stand against a ruthless criminal heading their way. They have to stop and intercept the criminal before he can reach the border and escape forever. Schwarzenegger plays the Sheriff of Sommerton Junction, the town through which the criminal and his entourage has to pass through to get to the U.S. border. Rodrigo Santoro and Zach Gilford play deputies while Forest Whitaker and Genesis Rodriguez play FBI agents.
The screenplay for the film was written by Andrew Knauer.
