The Workings of Printed Circuit Board Manufacturers

-

When you want to get some electronics products manufactured to your specifications, you need the services of a Printed circuit board manufacturer. Printed circuit boards or PCBs are an integral part of all electronics products with the exception of simple ones that can do with other configurations such as wire wrap and point to point construction.

What Does A Printed Circuit Board Manufacturer Do?

PCB manufacturers perform a number of services to the market. The manufacturer of PCBs is a process that requires intricate and precision design, manufacture and assembly work. This calls for highly qualified and skilled teams of employees that are backed by state of the art equipment capable of running the required automation processes. A company that does have the right level of automation resorts to unwarranted human intervention in the manufacturing and assembly of the products. This brings in an element of risk associated the all-too-common human errors that are sure to occur at one point or the other. Some companies produce the chips and need the services of PCB manufacturers to embed the chips on PCBs that have the right layers and conductive paths.
If you are not really familiar with what the manufacturers do, we are going to delve into the core of their processes.

Most of these companies have surface mount assembly lines and are able to offer PCB assembly services to various concerns who seek to outsource the service. The processes that make up the whole manufacturing cycle are:

1. The first stage is Solder paste printing which sees the printing of the initial solder paste onto the board with aid of a stencil. This material works to bind the devices to the PCB thus making a single unit.
2. SMT Pick & Place Assembly. This is the nerve canter of the whole assembly system. All the chips that are meant for the design are taken and accurately placed in the respective positions on the PCB.
3. The third stage is the through-hole curing where the PCBs go through a conveyor oven which acts to melt the solder and bind the chips firmly in their positions.
4. Conformal Coating comes next and is specifically meant for boards that require a protective lacquer coating. This is carried out by the Conformal selective coating machine which applies the coating accurately and quickly onto the PCBs.
5. After that the boards go through Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) and Automate X-Ray Inspection (AXI). This is to ensure that there are no errors in the products.

If there are any errors that can be fixed through reworking then that becomes the next process. Otherwise the products will be good to go.
