Joplin, Missouri is the fourth largest metro area in the state. The city is located in the southwestern region of Missouri. There is more than 51,000 people living in the city and has one of the most famous highways in the country, Route 66. When I visited the city I learned a lot about the many things to do in Joplin, MO. There are many historical places to visit along with places to enjoy the company of your family and friends while having a good time.
When I arrived in Joplin is was late August. I was able to attend their annual Boomtown Days Festival. This is a three-day event that includes music, cook offs, games, and rides. Boomtown Days is great for families and even for those on dates. This is a very cool experience. Yet, there are at least five other things to do in Joplin, MO. I was able to bring my family to these events and places to see.
Candy House Gourmet Chocolate
I was able to watch them make chocolate, sample it, and even have some ice cream while I was there. I noticed there was some wine tasting going on as well. They offer drinks to have along with the chocolate.
Cunningham Park
In 2011 this park was hit by a tornado and destroyed much of what was around it such as homes and other buildings. However, this park has been rebuilt and is one of the main places to experience while in Joplin. It has a playground for the children, a pond and fountain along with memorials for the victims of the tornado. There are picnic tables to enjoy lunch along with great landscaping and walkways to experience the entire park.
Joplin Museum Complex
This is a mix of five different museums that focus on history of Joplin, science, and specialty museums. I was able to learn more about the adventures of Bonnie and Clyde, doll history, and even about cookies and when cookie cutters were made. For sports lovers there is even a museum catered to sports as well. This is definitely one of the top spots to visit when in Joplin, Missouri. I liked the idea that there were several museums close to each other where I did not have to drive to another area to experience it.
Route 66 Carousel Park
This is one of the most entertaining parks to go while in Joplin. There are exciting rides, bumper boats, miniature golf, batting cages, a carousel, and go karts. Incredible fun to be had here especially if you have children. They will leave with a smile on their face. It costs $10 to get in, but then all rides are free. I had to pay for the food and drinks and for any games such as miniature golf or the batting cages.
Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center
This is one of the top things to do in Joplin, MO. This is a natural wildlife area with walking trails to view the plantation and forest areas. I did some bird watching while there and experienced going through the museum of wildlife program. It is really amazing to see what they do with various animals and be able to enjoy the incredible beauty around the center.
These are five of the top things to do in Joplin, MO. I plan to go back there in December to enjoy the annual Joplin’s Holiday Experience. This is two weeks worth of holiday activities with such things as pictures with Santa and carriage rides not to mention all the vendors they will have selling unique items.
