Tips and Tricks for Buying Roller Blinds Online

Buying something like a book, a Blu-ray copy of a film or even something as expensive as a television set have all become second nature. Many people recognize the benefit of Internet shopping for not only the presence of the best deals, but also a huge selection that even the largest physical retail spaces can’t match.

Yet there are certain types of products that people are still naturally hesitant to purchase online for a wide variety of different reasons. For many, shoes were an example of an item that people didn’t like to buy on the Internet as they were under the assumption that you can’t possibly find a comfortable pair without trying it on first. Roller blinds and other window blinds were, until recently, another example of such a product. Many people have come to realize that you can absolutely find the right pair of roller blinds on the Internet – you just have to be prepared to do a little work before you add an item to your virtual shopping cart and pay for the order using your credit or debit card.

One of the most important things that you need to do when buying roller blinds online is make sure that you’re properly measuring the space that they will eventually be installed in. Unlike when measuring a shirt or a pair of pants, you never want to use a soft or fabric tape measure when measuring a window frame for blinds. Always use a steel tape measure for the most accurate possible numbers, as that material will reflect the way the blinds themselves will fit into the space when properly installed.

Another important thing to remember is that you should always be measuring all dimensions in millimeters instead of any other unit. Roller blinds are commonly sold with dimensions that are measured in millimeters, so to make sure that you’re buying the right set your measurements need to use millimeters as well.

Finally, it is important to understand that you need to measure all window frames that the roller blinds will be installed in – even if you’re purchasing multiple sets of blinds for windows that appear to be identical. At one point in time soon after the construction of your home, all of those windows may have had identical measurements. However, with the ways in which a house naturally ‘settles’ over time, it is possible for even similar looking windows to have differences of 5 to 10 millimeters or more in areas. As getting the size of the blinds just right will not only help with installation but will also make sure that you don’t have to make a return, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

When measuring a window for a roller blind valance, you’ll need to measure from the outside edge of the frame to the outside edge on the opposite wide. If you’d like to add a little more privacy into the room and would also like to be able to control the level of available light with increased accuracy, you can commonly add up to 100 millimeters to the measurement that you find. Adding this additional space will allow the blinds themselves to be installed closer to the edges of the window, which will ultimately lessen the gap present in this area and will help keep natural light out of the room in periods of direct sunlight.

when measuring for roller blinds, you’ll also want to measure what is commonly referred to as ‘the drop.’ As its name suggests, ‘the drop’ is the area from the top of the window frame to the bottom, which is also the total length of the blinds that you will need to purchase. Some people don’t necessarily have a problem with the bottom of the blinds extending past the bottom of the window sill when they are in the fully extended position. If you do have a problem with that you’ll want to make sure to take care and measure the drop as accurately as possible. In an ideal world, the bottom of the blinds would rest one or two millimeters above the bottom of the window sill in the fully extended position.
