Tips That Will Help You Make the Most of Your College Years

College isn’t only about studying – it’s also about making friends, collecting experiences and learning more about yourself. Check out this article for some tips on how to get the most of your college years.

College is meant to be the one of the best times of people’s lives. It’s a transition period, when you hopefully figure out what you really want in life and you start to be more independent. We’ve gathered some tips that will help you make the best of these years. Take a look, below.

Be social

• Make lots of friends and do your best to learn something from everyone. It’s possible that you will lose contact with some of your friends from high school, so be open to start new relationships.

• Find a professor to mentor you. Learn from them, listen to their suggestions and ask them from advice. They will help you with your studies and offer recommendation letters later on.

• Attend networking events set up by your university to get your name or resume out there.

Figure out what you want to do next

Use your college years to figure out what you would like to do next. This doesn’t come easy for everybody, so take time to answer these guiding questions:

• What do you feel you do well?

• What do you like to do for fun?

• What are your strengths and weaknesses?

• What’s your favorite class?

• What accomplishments are you more proud of?

Add valuable experience to your resume

It can be difficult to get a job after graduation – even for high achieving students. In Oprah Winfrey’s speech to 2013 Harvard graduates, she said, “Build a resume that doesn’t simply tell a story about what you want to be, but who you want to be.”

Gaining experience during your college years can help you figure out who you want to be. Work at a part-time job or internship. You can also join a student organization or sport. Not only can you make friends, you can enrich college experience. These experiences will add value to your resume and show potential employers that you are interested in developing relevant skills.

You will likely get a job after you graduate, so you won’t have that much time to travel anymore. Take trips in college, as often as possible. Consider studying a semester abroad to experience a new culture.

Take advantage of your college years, before real responsibility kicks in. Now is the time to get to know yourself better, to make a plan for the future and to develop relationships that will help along the way. Enjoy!
