Calcium is naturally found in every food and is a necessary mineral for most of our body functions  like bone formation and maintenance. Calcium can also bind with other minerals and stop them from being removed from our body. Calcium citrate is a calcium salt of the citric acid which is used as a food additive and preservative. It can also be used for prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency in our body.

It is advised not to take calcium salt of citric acid or any antacids which contain calcium without consulting a doctor because calcium can make it difficult for your body to digest or absorb some medicines. It works best if you take it with some food.

If you have a history with kidney stone or parathyroid gland disorder then before its intake, seek your doctor’s advice about its conditions because it likely that you may not be able to take this chemical- calcium salt of citric acid or you may need to undergo special tests during treatment or a dose adjustment. It is advisable to talk to your doctor before its intake, especially if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

How to take Calcium citrate?

It is always recommended that you should take it as consulted by a doctor or as directions on the package. It works well with if taken with food. It can also be taken with a glass full of water but first let it first dissolve completely in the amount of water as directed on the package and drink the whole mixture.

If you overdose then symptoms like nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, constipation, confusion, delirium, stupor, coma may occur to you. Other side effects like any kind of allergic reactions like hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of your body parts, dryness of mouth or increase in thirst, and increased urination may occur. Ultimately, in this case too, you need an immediate consultation to your doctor and undertake precautionary measures for it.

As mentioned above, that it can make harder for your body to absorb  any medicines that you take so  consult your doctor if you are going to take the following drugs:-

  • Diagoxin
  • Antacids or other calcium supplements
  • Calcitriol or vitamin D supplements
  • Doxycycline, Minocycline or tetracycline.
