UPS Buying Tips

In recent years, more and more companies have begun to understand the value of having a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for their business. Because many business’ productivity, profitability and data stores would be devastated by a loss of power, a UPS has become a more commonly known backup plan for many companies. We have become increasingly dependent on computers every day, the benefits of UPS systems have come sharply into focus. They offer a backup power source in the event of a sudden power outage, preventing data loss and allowing business to continue as usual. But how do you go about shopping for one?

It can seem daunting to shop for UPS power supplies because of the glut of technical jargon that will be thrown your way, but finding the right option for you doesn’t have to be difficult. There are several different things to consider when buying a UPS. Use the following tips to make the buying process easier.

Know your budget. Because UPS systems work very hard to protect your data and keep your business running, they don’t come cheap. Online UPS systems are more expensive because they offer better security and reliability, but if you don’t have the budget for that, line interactive or offline UPS systems are less expensive but still very reliable choices. That being said, always buy the biggest UPS system you can afford. The better the specs of the unit you choose, the better the security you’ll have. One good idea is to buy a larger unit that also features extended battery backup.

Look into the possibility of splitting loads in a system that can operate in parallel. In other words, it may be a more economical choice to opt for two smaller UPS systems that are connected to one another rather than opting for one large UPS. The choice to buy two smaller, connected UPS systems is almost always a less expensive option.

When you are shopping, always look into how the performance of stand-alone, single-phase UPS systems compares to three-phase units. Three-phase systems are usually more expensive than a one- or two-phase system, but the redundancy offered by using more than one single-phase system alongside each other can offer the increased security and peace of mind of knowing that if one unit fails, the other(s) will pick up the slack.

When shopping for a UPS unit for your business, it’s important to consider your needs and your budget. If you are a small business with only a couple of computers, you won’t need a UPS with as much power as you would if you have a building full of computers you will require a larger UPS with a bigger capacity to ensure there is no loss in data or interruption in the work.
