Using Orange Oil and Tung Oil to Protect Wooden Surfaces

Restoring furniture can often be an exciting, yet daunting and time consuming task. With an array of products on the market, it is hard to decipher which oils and sealants will protect your furniture best. After the refinishing process, it is also important to properly care for your piece and selecting the proper care products and routine are crucial in extending the life of your furniture. When it comes to sealing and protecting a wooden surface, orange oil, tung oil and decking oil are three of the most commonly used products.

For polishing wooden furniture and protecting it against light use such as drying out and small scratches, orange oil is generally recommended. Orange oil is derived solely from the rind of orange fruit and penetrates deep into the wooden surface to moisturizethe wood particles. No need to clean your wooden surfaces because orange oil also breaks down wax buildupand removes dirt on wooden surfaces. In addition to its cleaning properties, orange oil also helps to rejuvenate the beauty of the grain and enhance the depth of the wood, while leaving your furniture smelling like fresh oranges! It is recommended to use orange oil on a regular basis as part of a normal cleaning routine.

In addition to orange oil, tung oil is another product that can be used for restoring and maintaining wooden furniture. While orange oil is used mainly for maintenance and cleaning, tung oil is generally used to create a protective seal over the wood and finish off the surface. With water and alkali resistant properties, tung oil is a leading alternative to toxic polyurethane coatings. It creates a thick, nontoxic seal that keeps dirt and moisture out of the wood and isideal for outdoor finishes in areas with high traffic. Tung oil is also very effective in preventing surface marks and scuffs on wood. While tung oil provides excellent protective properties, keep in mind that it can take several days to dry—much longer than other types of oil. During that drying time, it is essential to keep your furniture away from dust particles and flying insects that could get stuck in the drying oil.

A third alternative to tung oil and orange oil is decking oil. Decking oil is generally used exclusively for creating a protective sealant on decks and outdoor timber. Decking oil is primarily water resistant and with many brands offer additional benefits such as anti-fungal properties, UV protection and mold resistance. Decking oil soaks deep into the timber surface creating an almost plastic-like coating which is crack resistant and comes in a variety of stain colours. It is the most weather-resistant oil among the three varieties discussed in this article.

Orange oil, tung oil and decking oil all offer excellent benefits, but it is best to take into mind the type of furniture you wish to restore and the amount or type of traffic or use it will receive in order to select the right oil or sealant.
