Web Content: How to Write Online Articles

Creating web content or writing articles in the online world is a bit different than writing for magazines, writing books or essays, and similar. Today, the Web is used not just by ‘computer freaks,’ but also by business people, parents and children, grandmothers, and all sorts of people. Web content design and format of your online article must be clear, easy-to-read and comprehensible to all these audiences.

Online articles must have a title, body of the text, and a conclusion.

If you want to earn money from your articles, then knowing how to write online articles won’t be enough; you need to learn how to make money from article writing, which means you need to employ some on-page SEO to get you started. Basically, this means you need to decide:

  • what article topics you’re going to write about,
  • write effective titles
  • use your main keywords in the titles, sub-titles (where possible), once in the first sentence, at least twice in the body of the text, and in the conclusion.

? Titles and Sub-Titles

Make your titles interesting and attractive, but first of all, make them direct and concise. An online article has to be about what is suggested in the title, and the text under the sub-title has to develop the idea conveyed in that sub-title. Many SEO experts suggest using up to 64 characters (including spaces) in titles because search engines vary in regard to the size of the indexed title.

? Inverted Pyramid Style

In terms of web content design and online article writing, the inverted pyramid style (placing the most important information first within a text) became very important since several user studies showed that users don’t scroll, but very frequently read only the top part of an article. Only those readers who get interested will scroll and reach the foundation of the pyramid to get the full story in all its spicy detail.

? Paragraphs with White Spaces Between

Each paragraph should be written around one idea only – readers will skip over any additional ideas if they are not caught by the first few words in the paragraph. Paragraphs in online articles are usually divided with white spaces to make the whole article easy-to-read (see Figure 2 and 3).

? Highlighted Keywords

You should highlight the most important concepts, but not everywhere in the article and not too many times (otherwise, search engines may identify them as spammy content). A more effective form of highlighting would be using hypertext links.

? Bulleted Lists

If you are listing terms, questions, items, etc., you should use bullets to make your lists more organized and comprehensive.

? Right Word Count

Officially, you are required to use 2000 characters in your Seekyt articles (which may be less than 400 words), but if you want to optimize your web page for active visitors and search engines, you should use at least 500-700 words and not more than 1600-2000 words. If your article is longer than 2000 words, split the content into two articles (make the necessary changes).

? Links

Include links in your article. First of all, link your articles together to give more value to each of your articles. This will produce enough link juice to satisfy the web crawlers investigating your web pages. They like to be led from one page to another as long as the web content on those pages is relevant to article topics addressed in the articles.

Don’t be afraid to link to an external website; research has shown that internet users will like and share your content (on Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites) if they find that your web page can be trusted. You can increase credibility by good writing, high-quality graphics and use of outbound hypertext links – anchored text (text composed of relevant keywords turned into a link). Links to other sites (as long as they are trustworthy sites) show that you have done your job right and you’re not afraid to let readers visit other sites.

? Graphics

Graphics used in your articles may combine text and illustration. Examples are photos, graphs, diagrams, symbols, and other images. They have to be related to the web content on your page.
