What Could You Buy With The United States National Debt?

These days we have become accustomed to a national debt in the trillions of dollars, but does anyone out there really understand how much money this really is? The U.S. national debt is now over $14 trillion. That’s trillion! For those of us who learned such numbers in grade school and figured they were almost as ridiculous as a googolplex, they are not, but that doesn’t mean you really comprehend what a trillion is.

Here are some examples of what $14 trillion dollars could buy.

You could buy 4 club seats for every Dallas Cowboys game for more than 1 million years. That ought to be enough to cover you, your kids, their kids, etc. until the end of time or at least until the Cowboys upgrade the stadium. Heck, while you’re at it you might as well tack on Mavericks, Stars, and Rangers tickets as well. Of course, you could just give every fan at Cowboys Stadium 175 million dollars. Naturally, ticket prices would go up if you went this route.

You could pay off a $250,000 mortgage 56 million times or buy 56 million homes. You could certainly say goodbye to home interest and if you feel generous, instead of buying more homes for you, you could pay off the same sized mortgages of nearly half of the households in the United States instead. Of course, the depressing part of this idea is that this is how much we all really owe.

You’ve always wanted and iPad but couldn’t afford it? With $14 trillion you could afford 23 billion of them and distribute them to every man, woman, and child in the world living or dead. Not only that, you would have money left over for some really cool apps for everyone. Before you do that, though, buy some stock in Apple.

Spread It Around

With that much money you could give every person in the United States around $45.000. Gosh that sounds really great. Who couldn’t use some extra cash, and those with a big family can multiply that amount. I suspect that you would be the most popular person in America if you went this route. Of course, the new tax rate for gifts would probably be increased to 100% pretty quickly.

Get A New Car

Maybe you really need a new car. But since you have some bucks let’s not go for just any car. How about an Escalade? With $14 billion you could just be nice and buy every adult driver in the United States a brand new one. I know, I kinow – they use a lot of gas. So what? Nobody would have a car payment. See the note for the iPad – buy stock first.

Now Is It Clearer?

Those are just a few ideas that may make it clearer how much money $14 trillion dollars is. Of course, by the time you read this it might be $15 trillion.
