What Is Shared Web Hosting And Do I Want To Do This?

-

Once your website has been created you will need to find a company who can host it for you, which means that they will place it on one of their servers and make sure that it is accessible. There are a number of different packages that you could choose – from shared to dedicated or managed web hosting – but which type will be the most appropriate for your needs? If you are a small business owner whose major concern in cost, it is a general rule of thumb that you opt for shared hosting in the beginning.

So, what is shared web hosting? This is one of the most convenient and economic way of hosting your website, providing that you do not require extremely high performance or high bandwidth. As its name suggests, this means that the server responsible for hosting your website is also used to hold others, sometimes up in the thousands if the server is quite large. Generally, websites hosted in this way are given a shared IP address and are allocated a fixed amount of resources that they can use in a day, a week or a month.

Advantages

There are a number of advantages associated with this type of hosting service; we have compiled a list of some of them below.

  • Economical – This is a very low cost service; in many instances, you can expect to pay somewhere between $5 and $10 for these services every month, not taking into account great deals you can find.
  • Convenience – These servers are both managed and maintained by people who are highly skilled and possess a specialized knowledge of the field, allowing you to focus on your business.
  • Customization – Even though the resources may be shared, you will still be able to manage your own website using control panel or a similar tool that has been supplied by the host.
  • Efficiency – These days, your hosting service will come with web space and bandwidth that are more than adequate for a small business. You can add more resources to your website if you think you’ll need them.

Disadvantages

There are, unfortunately, a number of disadvantages associated with this type of web hosting; some are outlined in the list below.

  • Slower Responses – Because the physical server is being shared, some websites may have to accept a slower server response time than they would with a dedicated host.
  • Reliability Issues – Generally, the hosting service will take care of the security and performance issues of the server; running a malicious program can actually bring the entire server down.
  • Sharing Issues – You only need one ‘bad’ website on your server to get your website banned. The best way to overcome this problem is to pay extra for a dedicated IP address.
  • Security Issues – Unfortunately, shared hosting is risky and opens up a multitude of security issues because other small business owners have access to information on the server.

Before you decide that shared web hosting is the path you would like to take, it is important that you have carefully considered the advantages and disadvantages of making such a decision. Is it worth paying a little more for a server that is dedicated to your website alone if it means getting rid of many of the problems outlined above? Whilst your available budget will play a role in your choice of hosting provider, it should not form the ultimate basis for your decision, as there are many other factors involved.
