What to Do About Shin Splints Pain


What to do about shin splints pain is a question that many runners and others who are involved in sports that work the lower leg muscles on a consistent basis. I have had shin splints in the past and I am happy to say that I have them no more. It took a nasty stress fracture to bring me to my senses however.

The problem was I didn’t heed the warning signs. I kept on working out through the pain of shin splints when I should have been nursing them. My shin splints were caused by a combination of playing tennis without proper footwear, both shoes and socks, as well as over training. I ended up on crutches for 6 months!

Don’t do what I did. As soon as you know that you have shin splint pain STOP and do something about it. Do not keep pushing through the pain. You will only make matters worse and end up taking longer to heal than you could ever imagine. So, what to do about shin splints pain? It’s coming up stay with me.

It will be hard, but you need to rest your poor weary shin splints. This means stop pounding the pavement or whatever surface you’ve been stomping on. Ice and elevate shin splints immediately when you feel pain. Do not continue any type of high or even low impact exercises until shin splint pain is completely gone.

Stretch! There are specific stretching exercises that target lower leg muscles and you should be doing them. This might be one of the reasons why you got shin splints in the first place. These leg stretches should be done before and after high or low impact sports and exercises.

Strengthen! This means weight training or some form of resistance training that will keep leg muscles strong. Weak lower leg muscles are likely to be stressed more easily resulting in shin splints.

It’s okay to do non impact exercises such as swimming, cycling, elliptical machines, weight training etc. as long as there is no impact and no pain. This will help keep leg muscles working and keep you from getting totally out of shape.

Wear compression socks or leg compression sleeves that will help support lower leg muscles, especially when you resume high or low impact exercise. Compression sportswear enhances blood circulation and improves leg muscle efficiency when legs are stressed beyond normal limits.

Do your homework when shopping for compression sportswear by reading reviews on Amazon and other trusted sites. This way you will learn more about them as well as find quality products.

Now you know what to do about shin splints pain if only you will heed the advice and do it.
