When to Make Camping Reservations

Camping is a great way to get out into nature and enjoy the outdoors, but unless you know when to make camping reservations you may be locked out of your favorite campsite.

Many of the best campsites are located in places like state parks or county parks, but the most in-demand camping spots fill up quickly. In fact, in some parks they fill up very quickly, even before the first snow of winter – long before you are thinking about next summer. Here are some pointers to make your camping reservations in time to get the spot you want.

If you are camping at a park and you really like it and want to come back next year, see if the office will accept your camping reservation when you leave for the next season. Often they will do this if it is not too far in advance. The benefit of this is that you know exactly which campsites you found to be the best and you can request just the right one.

If you check online you will find that many state and county parks will accept online camping reservations to be made 1 year in advance. That seems like a lot, but the very best campsites, like that special site on the cliff overlooking the lake, fill up at that one year point. If you want that site you need to reserve online as soon as you can.

You can also check out nearby state forest campgrounds or local or private campgrounds. You may be surprised at what gems are out there in a nearby state forest. They may not have the same amenities as a state park, but the campsites may just be much better than at the park where they are more compact.

Camping is a great way to get away from it all, and it’s even better to get away from it all when you can score a secluded campsite or one with a stellar view. Whether you are going to use the tent, take a kid fishing, or go on a hiking tour, if you want to get the best sites for your home base you need to be on the ball and know when to make camping reservations.
