Department Stores

This really applies mostly to national chains, like WalMart. Stores like Wal-Mart sell them at their customer service areas, but they are not free. The total charge when you get money orders at Wal-Mart is $3. It’s not too expensive, but it can add up if you need several of them.

Gas Stations

Those that use money orders on a regular basis know that is generally the best place to go. Many gas stations, like BP, 7-11, Amoco, Kwik-Trip and others sell them, often for as little as 99 cents. This presents a good value for consumers that want to get them for cheap. While they are under a dollar, some limit the size to $300 or $500, so you may need to buy more than one of them.

Post Office

Why not get a postal money order when you are sending out your mail? As you look at where to get them, you’ll find the post office represents a good bargain, especially if you are looking for smaller amounts. Since you can pick up the small amount ones for about $1, it’s a good choice. Unfortunately, depending on the denomination you are looking for, it could cost you as much as $8 to get one from the post office.

You can get a bank money order at varying rates. Since the money is paid upfront or withdrawn directly from your account, many don’t limit the size amount you get for your money order. Some will only sell to those with existing accounts, or will charge higher fees for those that don’t, typically 1% to 3%. It all really depends on where you go, since the cost and fees vary so greatly.

Online Sources

You need to use caution when you get money orders online. Just because this is one of the places where you can get them, doesn’t mean it’s a great idea. This is risky, since there are some companies that will simply take your money and not send out the order. If you decide to buy online, it’s best to work with a reputable seller.

Major Companies

You can use Western Union or Money gram for cash orders to send out. There are many other major players in the industry that you may want to check out.

Now that you know where to get money orders and how much some of them cost, you may want to see who offers the cheapest ones in your area.
