Why Do I Feel So Alone?

Depression can cause a person to ask ‘Why do I feel so alone?’

Loneliness and depression are common feelings. One potentially confusing time is going to college and being away from home for the first time. Know that you are not alone in feeling these things. Know also that you can do something about these feelings.

Signs and Symptoms of Depression

There are a number of signs and symptoms of depression. Everyone experiences depression in their own, unique way. The following is a list of possible signs and symptoms of depression. Not everyone will experience the same group of signs or symptoms.

  • Loss of appetite
  • Overeating
  • Low energy
  • Fatigue
  • Problems sleeping
  • Hopelessness
  • Low self-esteem
  • Excessive self-criticism
  • Feeling that no one values you

Coping With Depression

Know that you are not alone and that almost everyone gets these feelings in their life. Know that the feelings of being alone and worthlessness come from the depression and not you. As does the thoughts that nothing good ever happens and that no one cares about you or that things will never get better.

Keep track of stress levels. Try not to take on too much and keep your schedule manageable. Maintain control over your health and take care of yourself. Make sure that you get enough sleep, that you are eating right and getting enough exercise. Try making sure you sleep seven to eight hours.

A good support group can help a lot. Surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people. Also take baby steps. Don’t plan out your entire future or even the next few months, instead make small goals.

Avoid drinking alcohol, since alcohol is a depressant and will only make these feelings worse. Get involved in the community and keep busy, but don’t overload yourself. You can also talk to a counselor or write in a journal, anything that will help you express yourself and your feelings. You should not keep these feelings bottled up. There are support groups available as well. There are a number of places that you can go to for help, including individual counseling, group therapy, counselors or workshops.

Helping a Friend Who is Suffering from Depression

If you have a friend who you think is suffering from depression, there are things you can do to help. First be supportive and listen to the friend. Also introduce your friend to coping techniques or suggest that your friend get professional help. If you feel overwhelmed with the situation, consider talking to a counselor for advice yourself.

Remember, that you are not alone in feeling loneliness or depression. There is a lot that you can do if you find yourself asking, “Why do I feel so alone?”
