The advantages of the new Windows 10

Smartphones Windows 10 run out … for now

Windows 10 includes a new feature called Wi-Fi Sense, which is disturbing to some people.

The feature allows friends to connect to your wireless network without giving your password. At the same time you can use Wi-Fi Sense to connect your PC with Windows 10 networks of friends without having to know theirs.

Although it may sound intrusive it has aspects that give you control over your network, as long as the know. These are the positive and negative aspects of the role:

Why Wi-Fi Sense is safe

Microsoft active Wi-Fi Sense by default in Windows 10, but does not share your network immediately. You have to choose to share your Wi-Fi clicking a box that states: “Share my network with my contacts”.

When you share your network, your friends from Facebook and Skype contacts and Outlook will automatically connect to your Wi-Fi network when your PC with Windows 10 are within the range.

With Wi-Fi Sense will not have to enter a password to access (if you have a Mac, an iPhone or Android device, you’d have to give your password). When your friends are connected via Wi-Fi Sense, may not share your network with your friends.

Wi-Fi Sense stores the password for your network in a Microsoft server. It is encrypted, so if a hacker wants to enter, your password is displayed as text meaningless. In addition, Windows 10 does not allow you to share access to corporate networks using special security protocols.

Why Wi-Fi can be a threat Sense

What’s that contact that began acecharte Outlook.com? Would you want that person to have access to your network? Wi-Fi Sense does not allow you to share your network with a single person: the share with all your contacts or none.

When people gain access to your network, it can take all kinds of bad things. They could penetrate other devices connected to the network, including your computer and your smartphone. They could steal information from your devices, such as photos, emails and other personal information.

Microsoft says that if you share your home Wi-Fi network using Wi-Fi Sense, your contacts will not have access to other computers, devices and files stored on your network.

This is achieved by turning off a feature called “discovering networks,” which prevents computers detect your friends computers and other devices connected to your Wi-Fi network. That makes it difficult (but not impossible) that your friend the hacker steal your stuff.

A Microsoft spokesman did not accept immediately comment on the matter.

Should you stop using it?

You’re probably safe using Wi-Fi Sense. These nightmare scenarios are possible but unlikely.

Even in the worst case (that a person stalking you use Wi-Fi Sense to steal pictures) would need to sit outside your house with a PC with Windows 10 while it gets into your network.

But if you want to protect those pictures and shared your network via Wi-Fi Sense, you can fix it.

Windows 10 lets you do it in the configuration section (takes a few days to register). You can also have Wi-Fi Sense not include your network if you type the phrase “_optout” after the name of your wireless network.
