French film composer Alexandre Desplat is behind the musical score for Kathryn Bigelow’s war thriller Zero Dark Thirty. It’s been a very productive year for the Frenchman. Besides Zero Dark Thirty, he has scored five other major films this year namely Rise of the Guardians (an animated feature), Argo (a historical drama by Ben Affleck), Rust and Bone (a French drama featuring Marion Cotillard), Renoir and Moonrise Kingdom. This is not to mention the non-English films he scored this year. That said, Desplat is a very prolific composer. He is also set to write music for the upcoming 2013 films The Grand Budapest Hotel and Zulu.
2011 was also a great year for Desplat. He was tasked to score huge Hollywood films including The Tree of Life, The Ides of March, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. So far, his body of work has earned him two Cesar awards and one award each from the Golden Globes and the BAFTA. He’s been nominated four times at the Academy Awards, all of which are in the category Best Original Score. These nominations are in recognition for his work on the films The Queen (2007), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2009), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2010) and The King’s Speech (2011). However, he didn’t win any of these nominations.
Zero Dark Thirty is right up Desplat’s alley considering the fact that he has scored several films that have very similar themes like The Ides of March, Syriana, Hostage, and of course Ben Affleck’s Argo.
